Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His son, Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or watch it all from your phone there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the possibility of the former president's move to foreign missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of planning to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The court filing highlights that the United States embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is located around 13km from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist United States President Donald Trump, causing him to implement a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will experience a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that he be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his political opponent, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plot which involved plans to murder Lula and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, numerous Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the federal district, Brasília.

The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The judges found that the rioters had been encouraged by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to take action, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the court case a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the next presidential race.
