Ceramic Gift, Anyone? Meloni to Sell International Gifts for Good Cause
Passing on unneeded offerings can be seen as slightly impolite – unless it's done in the proper manner.
A Philanthropic Sale
Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell a reported 270 gifts given to her by international figures on official trips. The diverse haul reportedly features items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.
The presents, collectively, are valued at around €800,000. The plan is to auctioned off via competitive bidding by a Rome-based fine art auction house. The specific date remains to be announced, but the goal is to hold the auction by year's end, with the revenue donated to a selection of charitable causes.
Storage Room Collection
The items are currently stored in a secure area on the third floor of the government headquarters. Sources state that Meloni furthermore intending to auction off gifts given to her political forerunners that have been stored away indefinitely.
A complete inventory has not yet been made public, but partial details emerged earlier this year when an 11-page list of official presents was submitted to lawmakers. The discussion raised whether a rule restricting expensive presents was being respected. Legally, a prime minister cannot take home presents exceeding €300.
An International Assortment of Presents
The collection includes:
- A scarf from the leader of Albania, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A traditional Kerala dress from the Indian leader.
- A case of jewelry from the Slovakian president.
- A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
- A electronic pad from the leader of Ukraine.
- Paintings from the Moldovan government.
- Various other items including cosmetics, a board, and several rugs received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Perhaps the strangest gifts included the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," observers have said.
Political Context
Meloni has been credited, mainly from her allies, with garnering support from international counterparts and making Italy as a key protagonist on the world stage once again.
The forthcoming sale symbolizes a distinct method to handle the state presents that accumulate during a political career.
