Chainsaw Man Dominates American Box Office in Debut Weekend

Can Sony claim to have achieved another hit? Following the triumph of the blockbuster Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which earned in excess of $600 million globally, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has surpassed the hundred-million-dollar threshold globally, reaching a worldwide gross of $108 million this weekend. This movie surpassed Black Phone 2 ($12.9M) in its sophomore frame in cinemas, as well as the music documentary Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring actor Jeremy Allen White (nine million dollars).

Impressive Domestic and International Results

Directed by director Tatsuya Yoshihara, the film is a direct continuation of the initial season of Chainsaw Man. It earned $18.2 million in North America after a robust $5.2M Saturday box office and $4.5 million Sunday. Internationally, the MAPPA-produced film grossed $14.7 million across 46 Sony markets, resulting in a global sum of over $60 million via Sony (over $43 million overseas, $18.2 million domestic). Sony has yet to announce its complete box office tally.

Comparisons to Previous Blockbuster Anime Movies

Promotional firm an industry expert noted in prior discussions, contrasting the film’s projected performance to Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which grossed $34 million in the domestic market in 2022 and debuted with a comparable $18M stateside. The new film's debut weekend is in line with that standard, while its $108 million worldwide total currently tracks just behind the earlier film's over $166 million overall box office. Although it’s unlikely this Chainsaw Man film will earn the earnings seen by mega hit the record-breaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, nonetheless, it is a significant success for the distributor.

Promotional Efforts Drive Box Office Dominance

Sony and its subsidiary Crunchyroll have successfully utilized audience interaction to drive their leadership at the cinema for anime films. The movie's promotional efforts kicked off at Anime Expo Los Angeles in July with a MAPPA presentation, special events, and Pochita-themed pictures, and later included a notable appearance at the New York Comic Con including behind-the-scenes footage, lotteries for fans, and additional MAPPA panels. Moreover, organizers held an special preview for fans for the public and influencers alike after the last day of the convention.

Looking Ahead

2025 is a significant period for anime, and for the company, which has another anime film debuting in the coming months in the upcoming Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in November.
