Patrick Bamford Joins Sheffield United Despite Leading Abusive Songs About Manager Chris Wilder
The striker has signed with the Championship side just seven months after instigating derogatory chants directed at the team's coach, Chris Wilder.
The 32-year-old forward, without a club since leaving Leeds United, has agreed to a deal with the second-tier strugglers through the winter. His lengthy time with Leeds was ended through agreement in August.
Among Bamford’s last memorable actions as a Leeds player involved leading abusive chants about Wilder during Leeds' promotion celebrations in April. Currently, the former England player is set to play under Wilder as the Blades’ manager aims to rescue the team he loves away from the relegation zone.
Previous History Between Bamford and Wilder
The pair had a past prior to Leeds moved up to the top flight the previous campaign and United lost the promotion decider by Sunderland. The manager called the forward as “a muppet” back when the roles were reversed during the 2018-19 season and Sheffield United secured direct promotion while Leeds fell short in the playoffs.
Reconciliation & Looking Ahead
Everything appears has been forgiven and forgotten with Sheffield United, the Championship’s least productive attack, in desperate need of a boost in attack while Bamford aiming to rejuvenate his playing days.
The Wilder chant spread widely this spring. An apologetic Patrick along with Leeds boss, Farke, called Wilder the next day.
Chris Wilder commented at the time: “Spoke with Pat recently and I have no issue whatsoever with that. I'm uncertain about the words used from a fellow professional! However I appreciated and respected him calling me.
“We had 20 minutes and the same again I talked with Daniel Farke as well and we had a half-hour chat with him and he is a super guy, a class act. Back in my playing days we used to give it and take it and that is an integral part of football at every level, even on Sunday league. I have no problem at all. I am cool with the situation and I said that to Patrick.”
Recent Playing Struggles
Bamford featured in 18 appearances for Leeds last season however the former Nottingham Forest, Chelsea FC & Middlesbrough striker has struggled with injury in recent years.
