Russell Wilson Fires Back at Former Coach Sean Payton Regarding Jaxson Dart Comments
New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson did not hold back on social media this Tuesday, reacting to latest comments from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated on X. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."
Wilson's response directly referenced the infamous bounty scandal controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.
During that period, the league found that the Saints had incentivized players for delivering aggressive tackles on opponents. As a result, Payton was suspended from the league for a full year.
What Sparked the Latest Exchange
Wilson's reaction came after Payton delivered remarks following the Broncos' historic comeback victory over the New York. Payton suggested that the Giants had "found a little spark" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.
Moreover, Payton implied that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson over Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" the coach stated.
Background of the Wilson-Payton Partnership
- Wilson joined the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245 million extension.
- The Broncos finished 4-11 in his debut year prior to Denver brought in Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a period in broadcasting.
- Payton replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a move that prevented the quarterback from getting injured.
Had Wilson remained on the team by spring 2024, his $37M salary for the following year would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, ending the contentious breakup between the player and his coach.
