Space Traveler Discloses Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also carried well-known figures.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a social media post, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and operated research during the mission, said everything she had worked for – from her lab work and years of training to the personal milestone of her background – was buried under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

In the time since fulfilling her dream, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose kindness helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She noted that even with the backlash, considerable good had come out of the experience, such as increased focus on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

Flight Details

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket departed Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.

The team of pioneers also comprised leaders in multiple disciplines.

The company behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a Amazon founder.
