Wessels will miss for the Springboks' autumn internationals.
Springbok prop Wessels has received a ban of nine matches for touching opponent Josh Murphy's private parts during the Blue Bulls' URC win over Connacht.
The incident happened in the 18th minute of the Bulls' 28-27 win against Connacht on last Friday, with Connacht forward Josh Murphy receiving a temporary dismissal after responding aggressively by hitting the South African on the head area.
Following Murphy reported the incident to referee Mike Adamson, the situation was reviewed by the television match official, who determined no definitive proof.
The Bulls player remained on the pitch until he was substituted in the second half of the match.
While the URC confirmed that Murphy's temporary sending-off was rescinded by a governing body, Wessels was found to have violated the code of conduct, which specifies:
"Any athlete should not engage in actions that is contrary to the spirit of good sportsmanship. Such behavior covers grabbing, pulling or squeezing the genitals."
Disciplinary officials determined that the incident reached the level for dismissal and warranted a 12-week suspension, the shortest suspension under international rugby rules for such an violation.
Nonetheless, Wessels' suspension was reduced by three weeks because of his cooperative behavior prior to and at the hearing and his good record.
Wessels and the Pretoria-based team are entitled to appeal, but currently, the ban will rule the young player out of the Springboks' autumn Tests against Japan, France, Italy and Ireland.
Wessels will also miss the his club's league matches against Warriors, the Lions and the Sharks, as well as European cup games with Bordeaux and Northampton.
Wessels has won ten international appearances for the Springboks and was included in their tri-nations champion team over the summer.
The Connacht player, in contrast, is available to play against the Irish rivals in this weekend's domestic clash after being exonerated.
