A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, which kicks off on January 18 in Melbourne.
Historic Comeback to the Australian Courts
The event organizers confirmed on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old legend will make a return at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. During 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the early stage before exiting in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.
Gearing Up for the Summer Swing
Venus had earlier stated in the month of November her plans to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a wild card, a fortnight prior to the Australian Open. The Australian Open noted that Williams is scheduled to participate in Australia's Hobart International a week later, just before the start of play at Melbourne Park.
Her last appearance in the city was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.
"I am thrilled to be back in Australia and looking forward to playing during the summer season," Venus said. "I’ve had so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m thankful for the chance to return to a venue that has meant so much to my career."
