The Lions of Teranga's Rising Talent Lamine Camara: From Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.
As I walk into the space, Lamine Camara grabs a football he clings to throughout our chat. It’s a simple visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “I only wanted football; my mind was set on nothing else,” states the Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His resolve and natural ability convinced clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the hardest person to convince was not a sporting director or coach, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me to play football simply because he had never watched me,” says Camara.
Surmounting Early Hurdles
Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to pursue his career in the sport. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred local club Casa Sports from giving him a deal.
Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the club that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the MVP in a local competition, Génération Foot were “shocked” to discover he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “They took me straight to the training centre. They didn’t want me from returning home,” he recalled.
A Landmark Season and European Breakthrough
This move put him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his nation to victory and being named best player.
Soon after, he signed for Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” says the 21-year-old. He resides by himself in Europe, a situation his family encourage to keep him focused.
Influences and On-Field Identity
Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “humility” and superb playing qualities. He is also a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to temper his competitive fire, having been shown red early in his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he quips.
Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Goals
With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.
Right now, his focus is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. If you beat England on their soil…,” he states, referencing a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the Premier League, he remains focused on Monaco at present. “I am very at ease here,” he insists. He is often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about targeting the main top prize in the future.
“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country… it gives you confidence.”
Looking ahead, this talented midfielder blends a modest start, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to guide Senegal to continental glory and build his own legendary path in the world of football.
