Users Discontinuing Slimming Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a major medical journal shows that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users purchasing these treatments should be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally have a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Experts suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural changes.
