Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
